West Ham United fans were getting excited to see young star Mipo Odubeko in the first team until his injury last month.

‘I didn’t fail medical’ says West Ham new boy Said Benrahma

A number of Hammers fans called on David Moyes to use the former Manchester United youngster in Carabao Cup games.

The young striker only turned 18 this week but was in red hot form for West Ham’s development side at the start of the season.

West Ham beat a host of clubs to Odubeko’s signature when he refused to sign a new deal at Manchester United last year (whufc.com).

Hammers have high hopes for Odubeko

And it is easy to see why so many clubs wanted the prolific goalscorer when he was twice on the scoresheet – and for the fourth time in two games – as West Ham’s Under 23s beat Southend 3-1 in the EFL Trophy last month.

There was something more to his performance than just goals, though. For many it felt like a watershed moment for the youngster.

Indeed one of his goals won West Ham’s September goal of the month award.

Many West Ham fans remarked they have not seen the kind of deadly finishing power and prowess displayed by Odubeko since a certain Jermain Defoe was emerging from the West Ham ranks.

Young striker closing on return after 18th birthday

Just as it seemed he would be drafted into the squad for West Ham’s Carabao Cup games, Odubeko picked up an injury.

He has been sidelined ever since.

But now the youngster is edging closer to a return.

And when he posted a comeback message on Twitter on his birthday while donning a new retro West Ham shirt, Hammers fans loved it.

“Birthday boy. Back soon!” Odubeko posted on Twitter alongside a picture of him wearing his birthday present, West Ham’s 1997/98 shirt.

A cult hero in waiting?

It is fair to say West Ham fans loved the photo.

And the idea that one of their youngsters would get the club’s retro kit on his birthday.

The post received a huge positive response from West Ham fans.

And supporters once again pushed the message to Moyes to get him in the first team squad.
