West Ham United co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold have asked vice-chairman Karren Brady to stop her controversial Sun newspaper column.
It is fair to say Brady is not the most popular figure among West Ham fans.
Some appreciate the job she has done in turning around the club’s finances following the doomed Icelandic ownership.
Brady rubs West Ham fans up the wrong way
Brady has played a key role in streamlining the club’s finances.
West Ham were reportedly on the brink of administration in 2010. Now the Hammers are officially the 18th richest club in world football.
Not that you would know it from insider claims that David Moyes has no money to spend this summer (Claret & Hugh).
But many more dislike the Apprentice TV star. And for those fans her rap sheet is lengthy.
From a plethora of broken promises over the move to Stratford – which would take too long to list – to ill-judged comments about the club not having any ‘culture’ (Evening Standard).
Brady’s column in The Sun where she has often in the past talked about intimate West Ham business and the goings-on at rival clubs is also a major bone of contention for supporters.
Owners admitted they were powerless to halt controversial Brady columns
That was despite the fact one such column infamously interfered directly with West Ham’s ability to sign Islam Slimani when Brady upset the tragically departed Leicester City owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha.
Abuse has been directed at Brady during matches and online, particularly on Twitter.
But Brady continues to write her column in The Sun much to the chagrin of West Ham fans.
Supporters turned on her again recently when she savaged out of contract striker Daniel Sturridge, who has often been linked with a move to the Hammers.
In her Sun column Brady performed a character assassination of Sturridge much to the embarrassment of Hammers supporters.
Insider claims Sullivan and Gold have asked Brady to drop column
Now according to reliable West Ham insider ExWHUemployee, Sullivan and Gold have asked Brady to stop the columns.
“Karren Brady has been asked to drop her column with The Sun and the chairmen really want her to do that,” ExWHUemployee said on the latest West Ham Way podcast (August 12th).
“I don’t think she’s made a decision yet as to whether she will or not. Because she makes quite a lot of money from it.
“But I think under the assumption that we stayed up she would drop that column. Whether she’s actually finally agreed to do that I don’t know.
“But maybe we will see from next season.”
