Some West Ham fans are genuinely baffled that Tony Dorigo thinks Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips is a better player than Declan Rice.
The former Whites full-back suggested that Kalvin Phillips is a better all around player than Declan Rice, when speaking to MOT Leeds News:
“He [Rice] has a good engine and he is a good leader as well as he is driving his team-mates on and him being there is impressive. He is integral to West Ham, but is he as good as Kalvin Phillips in that position? No, but he is not bad. I just look at what they can do and if you think about the passing ability going forward of Kalvin; those quarterback passes 50-60 yards, Declan can’t do that.”
Now, the West Ham and Leeds stars are constantly getting compared with one another.
Both are great players in their own right. The Leeds man is a hugely important player for Marcelo Bielsa at Elland Road. But Declan Rice is undoubtedly on another level to Kalvin Phillips.
The 21-year-old is stronger in the challenge, drives his team forward better and is more of a leader than the Leeds ace. He is also more than three years younger than him!
It is actually quite tiresome and boring hearing ex-Leeds players dismiss Declan’s passing ability. We as West Ham fans know how good he is in that department but for some reason, he doesn’t get the credit he deserves.
Perhaps we’re just being biased? Or perhaps the 21-year-old Irons ace is just the better player. Simple as that.
Gareth Southgate certainly seems to rate Rice more than he does Phillips. And that says a lot.
