West Ham can definitely now sign Dan-Axel Zagadou on a free transfer after his release from Borussia Dortmund was confirmed.
German media outlet Sport1 claimed last month that Hammers boss David Moyes is keen to bring the giant 22-year-old centre-back to the London Stadium in the summer transfer window.
Central defence is clearly an area where the West Ham boss wants to strengthen before the start of next season.
Angelo Ogbonna is still out with an ACL injury and will be 34 before the end of the month. Meanwhile, Craig Dawson has just turned 32 and the jury is still very much out on Issa Diop.
Moyes has to bolster pretty much every department of his squad this summer and he won’t have unlimited funds at his disposal. So the Scot will have to be thrifty with some of the business that he does.
And it seems as though the Hammers will have a great chance of striking a bargain deal for a top-class defender…
West Ham can now sign Zagadou for absolutely nothing
Dortmund Sporting Director Sebastien Kehl has confirmed that Zagadou will in fact be released, via Buli News.
That is great news for West Ham.
We quite simply have to get this one wrapped up asap – the young Frenchman is that good.
The Frenchman has only made 15 Bundesliga appearances for Borussia Dortmund this season but don’t let that fool you, he really is an exceptional defender.
BVB’s official website describe the centre-back as an ‘incredible’ player.
Standing at 6ft 6in tall, Zagadou is strong in the air but he is also quick along the ground.
The Dortmund ace is very good with the ball at his feet as well. In 15 league appearances this season he has made an average of 60.2 passes per game and has registered an incredibly impressive 88.2% completion rate (Who Scored).
He’s left footed as well – a crucial attribute for any defender Moyes brings in this summer.
There is one huge red flag for West Ham to take note of though…the 22-year-old’s horrendous record with injuries.
Since 2018, Zagadou has missed 563 days of action through injury (Transfermarkt). Most of his problems have been with his knee and he recently underwent surgery to fix that particular issue.
His availability on a free transfer means that he will be a low-risk signing for West Ham though, in spite of his recent injury problems…
Zagadou can play at left-back as well as centre-back so could end up being a really shrewd signing for the East London outfit. He has all of the attributes needed to go on and become a truly elite defender at the very highest level.
And if West Ham end up signing Zagadou on a free transfer this summer, it would be an exceptional deal for the East London outfit.
