Wayne Rooney has given Jack Wilshere a chance to impress him at Derby County after his release from West Ham last year.
The midfielder is now training with Rooney at Derby according to The Times.
Wilshere, now 29, was released by the Hammers in October despite the fact that he still had just under a year left to run on his deal.
The former Arsenal man went on to join Bournemouth but obviously didn’t do enough to impress on the south coast as he once again found himself without a club this summer.
When Wilshere left West Ham last year, he suggested that he would be ‘silly’ to sign for a team in a similar position to the Hammers, when speaking to the Super 6 podcast:
“With my experience now, I’d be silly to sign for a team in a similar position to West Ham. When there is a relegation battle, teams want to nick a point, nick a goal and try and defend. That’s not the type of player I am. I want to enjoy my football.”
How ridiculous do those comments seem now!
Rather than joining a team ‘like West Ham’ who have Europa League football on the horizon, Wilshere is now on trial with Championship strugglers Derby!
You couldn’t make it up! Perhaps Rooney will get the best out of Wilshere, who knows.
One thing’s for sure though. Releasing the 29-year-old in October last year was 100 per cent the right call from the West Ham owners.
