'Unreal': Michail Antonio hails 'unbelievable' West Ham fans after Southampton FA Cup defeat

Michail Antonio has absolutely raved about the travelling West Ham fans after our 3-1 defeat to Southampton in the FA Cup last night.

The Hammers took on the Saints at St Mary’s in the fifth round of the FA Cup yesterday and had a chance to reached the quarter-finals for only the third time since 2006.

Unfortunately for West Ham though, Southampton outwitted us and were far more clinical in the final third when it mattered.

David Moyes would have been gutted with the way in which the Hammers players took their foot off the gas and didn’t really lay a glove on Southampton after the hosts took a 2-1 lead.

The Scot has worked wonders since taking over at the London Stadium for the second time way back in December 2019.

There are still plenty of improvements to be made. However, one thing that we do have that’s unmatched in England is our travelling support.

The 31-year-old scored the equaliser against the Saints last night before the shots eventually went on to win the match.

Antonio and his teammates were cheered on throughout the entirety of the game by the 4,800 travelling Hammers.

And Micky told WHUFC.com just how grateful he and his teammates are for the unbelievable support they get week in, week out from the West Ham faithful:

“The fans were unreal. Even when we went 1-0 down, they were still out-singing the Southampton fans. They were unbelievable. They helped lift us to get the goal. Even when we went 2-1 down, they were still singing our names, so the fans were unreal and I’d give them applause for that. Thanks for turning out and hopefully we can do you guys proud on Saturday.”

Antonio is spot on, our travelling support is truly unbelievable.

It’s now time for the players to start giving us something to shout about again though.

West Ham haven’t put in a good away performance for quite some time now – probably Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on New Year’s Day.

It’s time for all of that to change. We have numerous hugely important games on the horizon and will have to make vast improvements if we are to emerge from it unscathed.
