Danny Murphy questioned the wisdom behind West Ham trying to sign Brentford winger Said Benrahma when speaking to talkSPORT yesterday.

Sky Sports reported three days ago that the Hammers had agreed a deal to sign the 25-year-old winger believed to be worth around £30 million in total.

But things took a worrying turn on Monday, with the Mirror claiming that the east London outfit’s proposed deal to sign the Algeria international was on the verge of collapsing.

West Ham insiders ExWHUemployee and Claret and Hugh have both suggested that a deal for the Hammers to sign Benrahma could still be very much on, however.

David Moyes began the summer in search of a new central defender.

And the Scot brought in Craig Dawson on loan from Watford a couple of days ago. It now seems that West Ham are looking to bolster their attacking ranks. Benrahma allegedly is a key target for the east London club.

talkSPORT pundit thinks Moyes has his priorities wrong

Danny Murphy told talkSPORT that bringing in the Algerian winger would be a strange move from West Ham, however:

“He’s a super talent and I’m sure he will add quality to the squad and competition for places. But with Bowen, Yarmolenko, Fornals, Lanzini, Antonio and Haller, to be using the best part of £30m on a player who you wouldn’t say is a priority. West Ham are talking about needing defensive back ups. And then they want to plough that dough in a forward player when they’ve got lots. If they are after a centre-half, which is what they really need, then it seems strange they are ploughing that much dough into this lad.”

Murphy has completely missed the point here, however. Not one single player he named is a natural left winger.

Having sold Grady Diangana and loaned out Felipe Anderson, left wing is undoubtedly a position where we lack any kind of strength in depth.

Sure, bolstering our back-line should have been Moyes’s priority at the start of the summer. But David Sullivan’s decision to move two wingers on has dictated the manner in which the West Ham boss now needs to recruit.

And if the Hammers do sign Benrahma, he will be a great addition for us.
