According to a report from Spanish media outlet AS (August 24th, page 18), West Ham could snap up Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Iago Herrerin on a free transfer imminently.
Hammers boss David Moyes has to strengthen in lots of areas this summer. And with little cash at his disposal, that will not be easy.
The additions of a new left-back, right-back, centre-back and centre-forward are desperately needed in east London.
The signing of a new goalkeeper, however, hasn’t really been talked about. On the face of it, we are well stocked in that department.
Lukasz Fabianski and Darren Randolph are Moyes’s two first-choice ‘keepers. Then the Scot has Joseph Anang and Nathan Trott coming through the ranks hoping to make their breakthroughs this year.
Delve a little deeper, however, and there are reasons to be concerned.
Fabianski is 35, whilst Randolph is 33. The former seems to have regressed since returning from injury and the latter has never really convinced at the highest level.
Meanwhile, Anang and Trott are totally unproven at Premier League level, and next season will probably come too early for both of them.
Free agent on Moyes’ radar
AS reckons West Ham want to bolster their goalkeeping ranks by bringing veteran stopper Iago Herrerin to the London Stadium this summer.
Inside Athletic claimed two days ago that the La Liga side are finalising the 32-year-old’s release from the San Mames Stadium.
And his availability on a free is obviously what has piqued that Hammers owners’ interest.
The Spaniard has made 119 appearances for Los Leones, conceding 136 goals and keeping 43 clean sheets in the process.
Herrerin isn’t a bad goalkeeper. He is a lot better than the last Spanish stopper West Ham signed.
But bringing him to the London Stadium this summer would be a totally pointless exercise. The 32-year-old isn’t any better than what we currently have.
If Moyes wants to sign a goalkeeper this summer, he should be targeting someone who is as good as if not better than Fabianski.
As mentioned earlier, however, signing some new defenders should be the Scot’s priority. The addition of a new goalkeeper can wait for another year. West Ham shouldn’t be signing Herrerin. Even though he is available for nothing.
