Paul Merson names the most important player at West Ham.

The Sky Sports pundit shared just how important Michail Antonio is to West Ham United, when speaking on Sky Sports yesterday.

The 31-year-old has been a key figure for the Hammers since David Moyes was reinstated as manager at the London Stadium back in December 2019.

Antonio has bagged six goals and four assists in just seven games so far this season (Transfermarkt).

Since football resumed after the first lockdown in June last year, the former Nottingham Forest ace has bagged 23 goals and nine assists in 40 Premier League games.

Antonio is a striker unlike no other. He is incredibly powerful, possesses pace in abundance and plays with a certain kind of infectious enthusiasm that is rarely seen in the modern game.

 

Merson is a huge fan of Micky.

When speaking on Gillette Soccer Saturday (October 2nd, 2:04pm), Merson suggested that without Antonio, West Ham are quite simply not the same team:

“When he’s not in the team you can take the United out of West Ham, when he’s in it, these are a very, very good team. These aren’t a one off this season, they will be there or there abouts again.”

There is absolutely no doubt about that. When Antonio isn’t playing, Moyes’s side are a completely different animal.

Hopefully Moyes manages to find a suitable striker to come in and provide competition for the 31-year-old either in January or next summer.

And until then, all we can do is hope that Antonio doesn’t suffer an injury between now and the end of the season.
