Lingard made an instant impact for West Ham, scoring twice away at Aston Villa last week.

He looked slightly jaded against Fulham but it is obvious to see that he will play a key role for the Hammers this season.

“He’s a great signing, I genuinely believe that. He just completely lost his confidence at Manchester United, but that doesn’t mean he’s not a good player. Sometimes you just want a bit of belief that a manager likes you. It feels like the right place for him (West Ham), it’s a lovely fit. This is a great time in his career, you can see that he’s playing with a smile on his face. I expect, because he’s such a goalscoring threat, there’s no reason why he can’t get five or six goals from midfield.”

The 28-year-old already has two goals to his name, so it would be no surprise to see him treble that tally over the net 15 games or so.

If he can finish the season with at least five goals and five assists for the Hammers, surely Gareth Southgate will have to take notice.

And that puts West Ham in a very strong position. With Lingard hungry and desperate to prove his worth, signing him in January could end up looking like a an absolute masterstroke from David Moyes.
