Jamie Carragher has absolutely slated Nayef Aguerd after the West Ham defender was handed a red card against Chelsea today.

Nayef Aguerd was given his marching orders by referee John Brooks midway through the second-half of the West Ham vs Chelsea clash at the London Stadium this afternoon.

The 27-year-old made a ridiculously rash challenge on Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson and was subsequently handed his second yellow card of the game.

West Ham were leading the game 2-1 at the time, and the fact that the Moroccan chose to dive in like that was hugely frustrating for the Hammers fans, David Moyes and of course, his teammates.

And Aguerd’s rashness really is something that he has to eradicate from his game, if he is to succeed in the Premier League…

There was absolutely no need for the Morocco international to make that challenge on Jackson today.

And Carragher criticised Aguerd on Sky Sports after his reckless challenge earned him a red card today (August 20th, 6:03pm):

“I mean what are you doing. I watched him going in and he was never getting there. Ridiculous challenge.”

Carragher is spot on here. It really was a completely crazy challenge to make at that time of the game.

Aguerd has done a lot of things really well for the Hammers since joining the London Stadium.

However, the rash way in which he dives into challenges is clearly his Achilles’ heel.

David Moyes needs to get in his ear and make it very clear to him that those kind of challenges are simply not acceptable.

Hopefully Aguerd learns from his mistake for West Ham against Chelsea today.
