The Hammers manager desperately had to bolster his central midfield ranks at the London Stadium this summer, after Declan Rice left to join Arsenal.

And the Scot has certainly done that with the signings of Alvarez and James Ward-Prowse.
However, whilst the latter started today, the former was forced to sit on the bench…
David Moyes shares exactly why Edson Alvarez didn’t start for West Ham vs Chelsea
Moyes spoke to a Sky Sports reporter before the game at the London Stadium today.
And the Scot responded when asked why Alvarez was not amongst his starting XI for today’s match:

“Edson, he’s really just back from Concacaf, he’s not quite ready yet, but he’s on the bench.”
To be fair, the final was on July 16th, so it’s been well over a month since that tournament finished.
Moyes clearly doesn’t think that the Mexican is quite ready to start for the Hammers just yet though, and that’s fair enough because he sees him every day in training.
Let’s hope that Edson Alvarez gets up to speed soon and starts producing the goods for West Ham on a consistent basis.
The 25-year-old is certainly good enough to play in the Premier League. I just hope that Moyes’s ‘easing in’ approach works with the former Ajax star.
