Goncalo Cardoso seems to be somewhat in limbo at West Ham at the moment.
Manuel Pellegrini brought the 20-year-old centre-back to the London Stadium from Boavista in the summer of 2019 for around £3 million (Football Insider).
He arrived at West Ham with a big reputation.
Unfortunately for Cardoso, however, he has failed to establish himself with the Hammers.
ExWHUemployee claimed in November last year that David Moyes and his staff haven’t been impressed with the 20-year-old whatsoever.
Goncalo Cardoso running out of time at West Ham?
Central defence is an area where the Hammers are arguably most well covered as far as youth team options go.
David Moyes has Aji Alese, Jamal Baptiste and Frederik Alves to choose from.
All of those three centre-backs are far superior to Cardoso.
It certainly doesn’t look good for the young Portuguese defender.
He joined Basel in January on an 18 month loan deal. The Swiss side have an option to buy Cardoso. And it would not be surprising one little bit if he wasn’t a West Ham player anymore come this time next year.
Whether West Ham will receive a decent fee for the 20-year-old remains to be seen. What is clear, however, is that Cardoso isn’t cut out for the intense nature of English football.
And a different experience in a new league is exactly what the former Boavista defender needs.
