Gabriel Agbonlahor highlighted how West Ham may have missed out on a great chance to make some real progress in the January transfer window.

The well-known pundit, more commonly known as Gabby, was speaking about the Hammers on yesterday’s talkSPORT show.

David Moyes has worked wonders since taking over at the London Stadium for the second time back in December 2019.

The Scot guided his West Ham team to an impressive sixth placed finish in the Premier League table last season and ensured qualification for the Europa League.

And we have been there or there abouts in the race for the Champions League places this term.

However, the East London outfit failed to take advantage of our position in January as Moyes failed to bring a single signing into the London Stadium.

Gabriel Agbonlahor criticises West Ham January failures

It was clear for the world to see that the Hammers needed another top-class striker and an established central defender in the January transfer window as a bare minimum.

It could even be argued that we needed a new left-back and central midfielder as well.

To not sign anyone at all was criminal though. Whoever was actually to blame for that is irrelevant. We missed out on a chance to really kick on.

And Gabriel Agbonlahor echoed that sentiment, when speaking on talkSPORT yesterday:

“This season, everyone was excited about West Ham, even the neutrals. But teams invest at the right times. In January was the right time to go and get another central midfielder, a centre-half and definitely another striker. You can’t just rely on Antonio, you need a plan b and I don’t think West Ham have a plan b. For me, it’s frustrating even as a neutral, Spurs, Arsenal, Everton, Newcastle, Wolves, Villa will all strengthen in the summer. So it’s going to be even harder next season for West Ham.”

Whatever you think about Agbonlahor, he has absolutely nailed this.

As a fanbase, we are far from demanding. We haven’t won a trophy since 1980 and still fill out the London Stadium and away ends week in, week out.

However, the fact that we had a real chance to gatecrash the elite this season and passed up on the opportunity to do so is the source of huge frustration amongst the West Ham fans. And rightly so.

Football clubs should always strengthen their ranks when they are in a position of strength. That’s where the Hammers were in January and the powers that be failed to act.

And we could very well end up regretting that next season when, as Agbonlahor said, every other club in and around us in the table strengthen their ranks accordingly.
