David Moyes has highlighted once again just how important Tomas Soucek is to this West Ham United team.

West Ham manager David Moyes brought Tomas Soucek to the London Stadium for £15 million in the summer of 2020 after he spent the previous four months on loan with the club.

The 28-year-old has been a very solid player for the Hammers over the past few years but his form has regressed since the start of the 2021/22 season.

Last year, he was really poor, but Moyes kept him in the team for the majority of the games.

And now the Scot has opened up on exactly why he values Soucek so highly…

West Ham ace Tomas Soucek is so important for David Moyes

The Scot addressed the media after yesterday’s 3-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield.

And Moyes responded when asked by reporters why he took Tomas Soucek and Michail Antonio off with 20 minutes to play, as quoted by WHUFC.com:

“We made changes to win it and took off a lot of our height and we knew we’d always be vulnerable [from set pieces] when we’ve done that.”

Soucek’s aerial ability is definitely something that Moyes places huge emphasis on when picking his team.

It was only a couple of weeks ago when he told reporters how much his team miss Soucek when he’s not available.

And his comments yesterday on the 28-year-old is terrible news for Lucas Paqueta, Mohammed Kudus and the West Ham fans because it means it will be incredibly hard for Moyes to fit both of them into the same team when Soucek is playing.

The only way it would work is if Moyes played a 4-2-2-2 with Soucek alongside Edson Alavrez behind Paqueta and James Ward-Prowse and with Kudus up front alongside Jarrod Bowen.

I just can’t see Moyes making drastic changes like that though. And because of that, I feel like it will be one or the other for large parts of the season when it comes to Kudus and Paqueta.
