David Moyes says Conor Coventry has had plenty of chances to leave West Ham

David Moyes has suggested that midfielder Conor Coventry has had plenty of chances to leave West Ham United.

The 22-year-old was given a start by Moyes for the Hammers last night against Silkeborg in the UEFA Europa Conference League.

And in fairness to Coventry, he really was very good indeed.

The Republic of Ireland under-21 international kept us ticking in the middle of the park against the Danish side.

The 22-year-old is a very reliable performer. However, the question remains as to whether he is good enough to be playing in the Premier League.

David Moyes praised Coventry after the game, but he has highlighted how he’s had chances to leave the London Stadium recently…

The Hammers boss addressed the media after last night’s 1-0 win over Silkeborg in the UEFA Europa Conference League.

And Moyes responded when asked about Coventry’s chances of forcing his way into the West Ham starting XI on a regular basis, as quoted by Football.London:

Conor is a good player and it has been difficult to get him some minutes. We have had Flynn and with the competition we have got it has been difficult. Conor had plenty of chances to leave but we wanted him to stay. He is such a good lad and a good trainer. He is a great competitor. He is the captain of the Republic of Ireland Under-21s. He had the chance to go in the summer.

Moyes obviously thinks very highly of the 22-year-old midfielder.

The harsh truth of the matter is that Coventry is still well down the central midfield pecking order at the London Stadium.

Declan Rice, Tomas Soucek and Flynn Downes are all well ahead of him, and even the likes of Manuel Lanzini and Pablo Fornals can be used centrally if need be.

Maybe Conor Coventry does need to leave West Ham at some point in the near future for the good of his own career.

That’s not saying that I don’t think he’s a tidy little player, because he certainly is. Whether he’s good enough to be playing at the very highest level is very doubtful though.
