West Ham United and Rangers were in discussions to play a high-profile friendly this summer.
Those plans were hit by the global health crisis but D-day is looming after Rangers boss Steven Gerrard revealed an announcement on the club’s friendly plans is imminent.
Before football was shutdown, West Ham were said to be lining up a blue ribbon friendly against the Scottish giants.
West Ham and Rangers had friendly plans
According to Claret & Hugh, which regularly claims to have a top level source inside West Ham – believed to be the club’s owners themselves – the Hammers wanted to play Rangers at the London Stadium.
The proposed match would be momentous because West Ham and Rangers have only ever met once before in 125 years.
Rangers have since seen the Scottish season scrapped while West Ham resume their battle against relegation tomorrow against Wolves.
The Gers will start the new season on August 1. That is just a week after the Premier League ends with West Ham playing Villa on the weekend of July 26/27.
D-day as Gerrard reveals announcements imminent
That means there would be a finite window for a friendly between Rangers and West Ham now.
And with games having to be played behind closed doors the prospect is not as exciting.
Whatever happens, West Ham and Rangers can expect confirmation either way soon.
That’s after Gerrard told Rangers TV that fans would soon find out who the club will face in friendlies before the next campaign.
“The plan for us is to get back to normality as quickly as possible,” Gerrard told Rangers TV.
“We want to give the fans some news in terms of friendlies that are on the horizon – we know that they want to watch our team.
‘We’ve got some exciting things brewing’
“Hopefully in the coming days and weeks we are going to announce some friendly matches. And we’ve got some exciting things brewing in the background.”
Whether one of those exciting friendlies brewing is against West Ham only time will tell.
A West Ham vs Rangers friendly would give Moyes the chance to check out reported target Alfredo Morelos up close.
The striker is said to be on West Ham’s radar and Rangers are reportedly open to selling at the right price.
