Aaron Cresswell has lauded West Ham United’s new-found strength in depth, and suggested that we were lucky last season to avoid injuries.
The Hammers moved on Issa Diop, Andriy Yarmolenko, Ryan Fredericks, David Martin and Alex Kral permanently in the summer, whilst Mark Noble retired.

Hammers boss David Moyes also loaned out Arthur Masuaku and Nikola Vlasic.
The Scot brought in eight new players in the form of Alphonse Areola, Nayef Aguerd, Flynn Downes, Gianluca Scamacca, Maxwel Cornet, Thilo Kehrer, Emerson Palmieri and Lucas Paqueta.
So there has been a huge turnaround at the London Stadium. The key here though is that every signing West Ham made are genuine contenders to start in the Premier League, unlike the eight players who left.
All of those new signings still need time to gel, but when it all clicks, we will be a seriously good side.
Moyes has options now as well that he quite simply didn’t have last season…
Aaron Cresswell makes ‘lucky’ West Ham claim
The 32-year-old was speaking to WHUFC.com and highlighted how the club’s new-found strength in depth is a really good thing:
“We had one of the smaller squads last year. We were really lucky with injuries which was a big factor in doing well in both the Premier League and Europa League. There’s competition all around the squad now which can only be healthy for the boys. To play Thursday-Sunday near enough every week isn’t easy and sometimes it’s good to have rotation. Look, we’ve got a fantastic squad now and we want to kick-on.”
Cresswell is spot on.
If West Ham are to have any chance of challenging for honours on all fronts this season, then Moyes will have to use his entire squad.
The Scot can do that now, because each and every player is good enough to be starting.
Aaron Cresswell has made it very clear that the West Ham players are happy with the added competition for places this season.
