The Hammers really dug in against the Reds at Anfield and made themselves very hard to beat.

We took the lead early on and only a very soft penalty just before half-time got the Premier League champions back into the contest.

Liverpool eventually went on to win the game. But the result was slightly harsh on West Ham.

David Moyes deserves great credit for the manner in which he has transformed the Hammers into a well-organised, well-drilled and hard working team. Everyone knows their jobs inside out.

And West Ham are a far cry from the flaky team that Manuel Pellegrini managed.

Aaron Cresswell spoke to WHUFC.com after the game and shared how the players’ disappointment at having lost to Liverpool is a sign of how far they have come as a club:

“We said in the changing room after the game that we were a little bit disappointed to come away with nothing. We knew coming here was not going to be easy and I felt we dealt with the pressure really well. On another night we could have taken our chances a little better and made a bit more of it. We’re feeling disappointed but maybe on another night we’d have got something out of it. That’s a sign of progress. To come to Anfield and feel disappointed not to come away with something. We’ll go again.”

Next up for West Ham is a game against Fulham at the London Stadium at the weekend. And nothing less than a win will do if we are to capitalise on our fantastic start, having played six of last season’s top eight.

The Hammers are a different team now. We are certainly more competitive against the bigger clubs.

But only time will tell whether we have enough creativity and guile to break down the opposition when we are the team who are expected to win.
