Former West Ham United star Rio Ferdinand has delivered his verdict on the job David Moyes is doing in east London.

Rio still talks fondly about his time at West Ham.

And the feeling is mutual. Indeed fans used to call the redeveloped West Stand at Upton Park – The Rio Stand.

Rio assesses West Ham’s best start for five years

It was a nod to the fact it was built after he was sold to Leeds for £18million – a world record at the time for a defender.

Rio, and brother Anton, keep a keen eye on the fortunes of West Ham.

And there has been plenty of positives this season as West Ham continue their best start to a campaign for five years.

In truth the Hammers have been in fine form ever since football returned after the first national lockdown.

West Ham look a strong, organised, solid, energetic and committed outfit under Moyes.

And they have married that with being dangerous going forward. That was on show once again in the 2-1 victory over Leeds last time out, a game the Hammers should have won by a more comfortable margin.

Speaking on his FIVE YouTube show, Rio said he is impressed by what Moyes is doing at West Ham.

“Two of my former clubs going at it (last time out) in Leeds vs West Ham and Leeds were dealt a Hammer blow,” Rio said on FIVE.

“West Ham run out 2-1 winners man. Listen, David Moyes is absolutely flying.

“He’s got this team going, he’s got this team playing to a certain style of football that IS David Moyes. They work hard and they grind out results. This is what they do.

‘Declan is absolutely dominating the centre of the park’

“They’ve got some good players. Declan Rice at the moment I think is a standout player.

“He’s absolutely dominating the centre of the park. All round he seems to be flourishing and just blossoming into a top player.

“At the moment West Ham just look to be a team just capable of grinding out the results and David Moyes is doing a fabulous job.”
