West Ham United legend Frank McAvennie has sent a clear message to owners David Sullivan and David Gold over the London Stadium.

McAvennie loved his old stomping ground Upton Park as much as the club’s fans.

But he believes the move to the troubled move to the former Olympic Stadium can still be salvaged.

West Ham fans increasingly bitter and regretful over stadium move

Over four years on from leaving Upton Park West Ham United fans are growing increasingly bitter rather than settled at the London Stadium.

Granted only 2,000 Hammers fans have not been in their new home since February.

But the truth is West Ham supporters will probably never get over leaving their beloved Boleyn.

Not until the new ground is fit for purpose and seats are brought closer to the pitch anyway.

London Stadium improvements too piecemeal

West Ham have moved to try and improve the matchday experience over the last two seasons.

But McAvennie believes the measures have been piecemeal and the West Ham owners must go further.

The legendary Hammers striker told The West Ham Way Extra Time podcast that Sullivan and Gold must look to buy the ground and turn it into a proper football stadium the fans can be proud of.

“I’ll never get over this (that) we (West Ham) don’t own our own stadium,” McAvennie told TWHW Extra Time podcast.

McAvennie says Sullivan and Gold must buy the stadium and turn it into a proper football ground

“I can’t get my head round that. Listen I can understand the deal to rent it. But make it into a football stadium. I think it’s so lazy. They’re arguing about things and Karren Brady might be good at her job but you walk in and you’ve got photos of Linford Christie and some person that’s won medals at 100m and all that and I’m going ‘Who are these people’.

“It’s a football stadium (now)… I would love to see them buy it, I know they can’t do it for another year or so.

“But I’d love to see Mr Sullivan and Gold, if they’re going to still be there buy the stadium, turn it into a football stadium and give the fans something to be proud of you know.”

Last week one of McAvennie’s Boys of 86 teammates Mark Ward revealed he warned Sullivan to his face about leaving Upton Park but was ignored.
