West Ham under-23 boss Mark Robson absolutely raved about talented young duo Aji Alese and Levi Laing, when speaking to the club’s official website last night.
The Hammers U-23s beat Exeter 3-0 away in the Premier League Cup and went top of the group in the process.
Armstrong Okoflex scored an unbelievable goal and rightly received all of the plaudits.
Two players’ performances have seemingly gone under the radar somewhat though.
Aji Alese and Levi Laing were exceptional at the heart of West Ham’s defence. And their displays drew praise from the under-23 boss Mark Robson.
West Ham under-23 manager Mark Robson blown away by duo
David Moyes must be delighted with the amount of talented young players currently coming through the ranks in the Hammers academy.
And Robson singled out two of them in particular, when speaking to WHUFC.com last night after the youngsters beat Exeter 3-0 in the Premier League Cup:
“Aji and Levi, who experienced something they don’t normally experience in U23s football and they had to deal with a lot of direct balls. I thought the pair of them were outstanding tonight. In terms of a learning process, that was a perfect opportunity to see them against a more direct side. They covered the spaces well and dealt with the balls in the air well.”
Robson is right, both players he mentioned are exceptional young players.
Alese, 21, haș been part of the West Ham academy since he was a young boy.
Meanwhile, Laing, 18, joined the Hammers from Arsenal in the summer and he has already made a very big impression at the London Stadium.
West Ham have such a bright future ahead of us. The challenge for Robson and Moyes will be to integrate this batch of talented youngsters into the first-team over the course of the next couple of years.
Premier League football is a huge jump up in both quality and intensity from the under-23s. So it will be interesting to see which players make it and which ones don’t.
The early signs look very good for Alese and Laing and it probably won’t be too long before we start seeing them both regularly included in Moyes’s match-day squads for the cup games.
