It’s official! Mauro Zarate has signed for West Ham on a three year deal with an option of another year. Originally it was rumoured that Zarate was to cost the Hammers a fee of £7 million, which is a lot of money for a player who was previously plying his trade in Argentina. However it has now come about that Zarate will in fact be a free signing! This is due to the fact that he bought himself out his contract so that he could join us. This is because he would relish the chance to play in the Premier League again, after a stint with Birmingham in the year they got relegated.
Mauro has been playing in the Argentinian leagues with his original club Velez Sarsfield. In 32 games in all competitions this season he has managed to score 18 goals, getting 3 assists also. This enabled him to finish as the division top goalscorer. The forward is also a versatile player who can play on the wing, probably the position that he will end up playing in for West Ham.
So what do we need to know about Zarate? Well, he is 27 years old and is a fast and fairly skillful player. These are two attributes that West Ham are lacking at the moment. He also knows where the goal is, something our forwards struggle to find.
