Most of the West Ham United transfer news in January centred around our need for a new midfielder.
Graham Potter brought James Ward-Prowse back to West Ham after his failed loan stint with Nottingham Forest.
However, the lack of energy, power and athleticism in the middle of the park at the London Stadium is still very clear to see.
Since the Hammers sold Declan Rice to Arsenal in 2023, we have lacked all of those attributes in the engine room.
The fact that West Ham didn’t sign someone like Youssouf Fofana two years ago actually blows my mind.
How on earth did David Moyes and Tim Steidten think the team would thrive in the Premier League without any ball-carrying midfielders?

Hopefully Potter has a very different view on the situation than Moyes and Steidten did.
However, the latest claim doesn’t inspire much confidence.
You won’t believe your eyes after latest West Ham transfer news
Without a powerful, box-to-box midfielder, Potter won’t have any chance of succeeding with the Hammers.
If he thinks Ward-Prowse is that man, he’s seriously mistaken, and will be in for a real shock when he sees the 30-year-old play first hand.
Given the urgent need for a new ball-carrying midfielder at West Ham in January, the latest claim is a hugely surprising one.
Claret and Hugh have provided an update on our lack of transfer activity in the January transfer window:

“According to our top source at the London Stadium, the club was desperately trying to sign a midfielder up until the point new gaffer Graham Potter arrived at the London Stadium.“
Mmm, I’m not quite sure what to make if that.
Does that mean that Potter is prepared to wait until the summer before bringing in the central midfielder that we so desperately need?
Or does the Hammers head coach not agree with the notion that his squad is lacking a central midfield powerhouse?
I really hope that it’s the former.
If the summer transfer window goes by without a box-to-box midfielder joining the Hammers, we will be in real trouble, and so will Potter.
I am simply not interested in any other West Ham transfer news until we get the signing of that specific player over the line.
