With the departure of Stephen Henderson on a 3 month loan to Ipswich this leaves West Ham with only Raphael Speigel as back up for Jussi. As we know this is not very good because he is only 18 and has never played in the Premier League before. Following Henderson’s move rumours were rife on Twitter with many people saying that Green could possibly be making a return to West Ham. This however would happen in January as he is still contracted to QPR unless they release him before then.
Green left the Hammers on a free after their promotion to the Premier Legaue from the Championship last season. I for one could not believe that he would leave seeing that we had been promoted, I was more shocked though at the fact that he claimed that he wanted to play for a bigger club and that leaving West Ham would allow that. So who was this bigger club that came calling only fellow Londoners QPR. It is clear to everyone that QPR are not a bigger club and that Green’s move was motivated by money. It is believed that he is on about 50k at QPR and as nice as that is I don’t think it’s nice enough to be sitting on the bench for. That’s right the bench. After a string of errors by Robert in his first few games for QPR he was dropped and Julio Cesar was brought in to replace him. To be fair to Hughes though if you was granted the opportunity to sign Cesar for 1m you would have. Even though Julio Cesar has made some errors during this season manager Mark Hughes has vowed to stand by him, possibly making Green more frustrated possibly feeling betrayed. This has led to rumours on Twitter claiming that West Ham have made an approach for Green with one tweet from @Agent_EPL saying ” Incredible developments have taken place today regarding Robert Green returnig to West Ham.”
However there was another tweet claiming there was another goalkeeper on the cards, “A few people have been speculating that free agent Craig Gordon will join #WestHam tomorrow as goalkeeper cover after Henderson went out on loan today.” Although the day that was described as tomorrow has been and gone, it still doesn’t mean that a move for Gordon is still not a possibility. Craig Gordon is the most expensive English keeper after Sunderland bought him for 7m, he is now currently a free agent. This could mean that West Ham could sign him at any time for cover and I believe he would be a very good replacement. He is 29 which would mean he is 3 years younger than Green and would mean that he could be at the club for longer. Also if Sunderland was prepared to break the British goalkeeper record than that means that they must have seenn something in him. As they say ‘form is temporary, class is permanent.’
So would I have Green back probably not because he has betrayed us for a smaller club, just for a bit more money. Also because I couldn’t see QPR releasing him any time soon which would mean that we would have to wait till January to get him if something went wrong with Jussi. Another reason is because Craig Gordon is also available and I would make a move for him as he still has many years left in him and he is free. He can also command his box which is something Green fails to do.
