West Ham United fans getting carried away by the club’s £100 million summer spend were brought crashing down to earth against Liverpool.

When the Hammers moved to the London Stadium two years ago it was on the promise of a bold new era.

Co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold pledged to spend big thanks to increased revenue from the new stadium.

The reality until the summer was a paltry net spend between £10-20 million.

It was perhaps no surprise then in this fiercely competitive Premier League that West Ham struggled in their first two seasons at the former Olympic Stadium.

Credit where it is due but net spend nothing groundbreaking

Supporters expected much more.

And they showed their frustration with protests last season.

Angry Hammers fans have been placated, for the time being at least, by the club’s appointment of Manuel Pellegrini and the summer splurge.

But with the sale of Cheikhou Kouyate, the net spend over the five transfer windows since the stadium move is £100 million.

Anything else and Pellegrini will have worked wonders

That’s an average of £20 million per window.

It’s not insignificant by any stretch.

In the grand scheme of things, though, it is hardly groundbreaking either.

Expectations for West Ham should range from finishing anywhere between eighth and 12th this season.
