Despite a second consecutive relegation from the Premier League, West Ham star Mateus Fernandes is in demand as ever.

West Ham United’s collective failings during the 2025/26 season have not been enough to deter top clubs from chasing Fernandes this summer.

What do you make of the ‘Mateus Fernandes to Real Madrid’ rumours? 🇵🇹 👑

He's good – but is he THAT good?

Mateus Fernandes of West Ham United celebrates scoring his team's third goal during the Premier League match between West Ham United and Sunderland at London Stadium on January 24, 2026 in London, England.

Indeed, Real Madrid are the latest club interested in signing Fernandes this summer. Jose Mourinho, who could well be appointed as Los Blancos manager on Sunday, is reportedly keen to bring him to the Spanish capital.

Such is the level of excitement about the player, Manchester United have also been linked with Fernandes

Things could all come to a head on Sunday….

Real Madrid’s presidential elections could define Fernandes future

That’s because Real Madrid will announce the winner of their presidential elections on Sunday.

Mourinho will only be appointed as their manager if long-serving incumbent Florentino Perez wins. If he doesn’t, Enrique Riquelme will take on the responsibility and he could well go in a different route.

Really, the best possible outcome for West Ham is that Perez wins. In that event, the Irons could feasibly pit Madrid, Manchester United and whoever else might be interested together and watch a bidding war unfold.

Hammers News understands that it would take a bid in the region of £60million for them to even consider selling the Portugal international this summer.

It remains to be seen if the club can be talked down from such a valuation following their relegation from the Premier League, however.

Still, for now at least, the talk is one of ambition. Fernandes is on a long-term contract here in east London and the club have already told Hammers News that a bid of around £40million would be swiftly rejected.

It does seem very likely that Fernandes will leave but West Ham do have hope of raising major money.
