Why West Ham not moving for Wolverhampton Wanderers signing Leander Dendoncker is great news for fans

West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers were both linked with Leander Dendoncker this summer but Wolves got him.

In fact West Ham had been linked with the Belgian international since last summer, when Slaven Bilic was manager.

The 23-year-old has joined Wolves on an initial season-long loan.

But the move will be made permanent next summer – as reported by Sky Sports.

Dendoncker can play both as a midfielder and a defender and was scouted by West Ham last summer when Tony Henry and David Sullivan were heading up the club’s recruitment.

And a January deadline day move to West Ham also failed to materialise after the player was scouted by David Moyes and Stuart Pearce.

This charming man is in charge

When central midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate was sold to Crystal Palace last week many Hammers fans hoped Dendoncker would be the man to replace him.

Instead he has joined Wolves, who like West Ham have made a plethora of new signings this summer.

But that is good news for West Ham.

Because it is proof Manuel Pellegrini is truly in charge.

One of the biggest grievances of the Hammers faithful was the meddling of owners Sullivan and David Gold in the club’s recruitment.

And supporters remained sceptical even when Pellegrini was appointed along with his close friend and director of football Mario Husillos.

New recruitment process is no dud

The duo have instead opted for the experience of 32-year-old Colombian international Carlos Sanchez.

West Ham could easily have landed Dendoncker in a similar deal to Wolves had they still been interested.

But that was in the previous structure.

So Hammers fans can take great comfort in the fact the club did not sign him even if he was a player supporters wanted in.

It sends out a clear message that Pellegrini and Husillos are the ones making the signings at West Ham.
