Why West Ham must prioritise signing Thomas Meunier in January

West Ham should be looking to plan ahead in January.

One particular area that will require attention very soon is their right-back department.

The Hammers sold Sam Byram in January. And Pablo Zabaleta is set to leave in the summer of 2020.

So Manuel Pellegrini should already be eyeing up a top class right-back as a priority.

And an ideal option for them could be PSG’s Thomas Meunier.

The Belgium international is out of contract next summer, so West Ham should make a move for him January.

The French giants will surely be keen to sell him, rather than risk losing him for nothing in 10 months time.

So the PSG man might just be available for a bargain fee.

The Hammers would be making a smart call signing Meunier during the winter transfer window. This would give the 28-year-old a full six months to adjust to life in England and the pace and intensity of the Premier League before the start of the 2020/21 campaign.

The 39-capped Belgium international is quick along the ground, tenacious in the tackle, and is vastly experienced at playing at the very highest level.

He would provide stiff competition for Ryan Fredericks, and would be a great character to have in the dressing room.

West Ham will undoubtedly need to strengthen in the right-back department, and the possibility of signing someone with Meunier’s pedigree for a potentially minimal fee seems like an absolute no-brainer for the east London outfit.
