West Ham United have confirmed the departure of young forward Elisha Sowunmi, the teenager joining Premier League and London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

But who is he? What have the Hammers lost? And what drove him to become only the third player – academy or first-team – to leave West Ham United for Tottenham Hotspur since Michael Carrick crossed the divide in 2004?

West Ham confirmed on Friday afternoon, on their official website, that Elisha Sowunmi had brought an end to ten years in claret and blue. The 18-year-old joins Tottenham for an as-yet undisclosed fee.

Now, Fans may remember when Sowunmi linked up impressively with Michail Antonio for a brief stint last summer.

Antonio hung around in East London for a few weeks after his contract expired, turning out for Mark Robson’s Under-21s.

Sowunmi set up one of Antonio’s two goals in a 2-1 friendly victory over Boreham Wood. While he finished the 2024/25 campaign as West Ham’s top scorer at Under-18 level, the winger clearly has a creative streak too.

Because, as Josh Ajala struck a brace to beat Reading as the Hammers claimed the Under-18 Premier League Cup in May, it was Sowunmi who set up both goals.

This was supposed to be the season when Sowunmi made the step up permanently from the U18s to the U21s. Instead, he departs after only eight games at Premier League 2 level, scoring once against Birmingham City in September.

Elisha Sowunmi leaves West Ham United for Tottenham Hotspur

Sowunmi featured in West Ham’s most recent victory in the Under-21s; a 2-1 triumph over Norwich City last Friday.

His move to Tottenham also comes just six months after he signed professional terms with West Ham.

“It feels good to have signed my first professional contract,” Sowunmi said at the time. “Being a professional footballer is something I’ve thought about for so many years so for it to finally happen is such a great feeling.

“I’ve come through the age groups with players I’ve grown up alongside so to see all of us reach this point together is really special. Hopefully we can all keep pushing and improving with the U21s.”

Kenny Brown, the club’s Academy Manager, felt Sowunmi had ‘all the talent in the world’, coupled with the drive required to fulfil his vast potential.

“Elisha has thoroughly deserved his contract,” Brown said in June. “I’m excited to see him progress with the U21s at Rush Green.

“We’re not putting a ceiling on Elisha’s potential. He has all the talent in the world.”

Spurs beat Scottish champions Celtic to Sowunmi signing

As for exactly why his departure came about – a move which sees him become the first young player to swap the Hammers for Spurs since Ferdinand Okoh in 2019 – the background provided by reporter Pete O’Rourke may shed some light.

Tottenham, O’Rourke says, had tracked Sowunmi for more than a year. The sustained interest shown in him from down the road in North London clearly left a good impression on Sowunmi and his camp. So much so that he reportedly chose Tottenham over Celtic.

Belgian giants Club Brugge also showed an interest back in 2025.

As for Okoh, the now-21-year-old is currently a free-agent after leaving Isthmian League outfit Wingate & Finchley. Sowunmi, it is safe to say, will hope to avoid going in the same direction.

Josh Ajala’s future is also uncertain amid Bundesliga and Ligue 1 interest

West Ham did sign Venezuela starlet Keiber Lamadrid this month, and it was rumoured that he would play initially for Lincoln’s reserves. Thus, creating greater competition with Sowunmi for a spot on the wings. However, in the days since, Lamadrid’s agent has confirmed that he is a ‘first-team’ signing.

There is also speculation surrounding the future of the man who inspired West Ham to Under-18 Cup glory last season. Josh Ajala is attracting interest from Germany and France, Fabrizio Romano reported a few days ago.

The Hammers appear at risk of losing two of their most exciting teenage forwards in the same window, then.
