What Guido Rodriguez has ‘told his family’ about West Ham future with exit talks underway

The summer really cannot come soon enough for West Ham United with only three matchdays remaining in a miserable Premier League campaign.

Though whether Graham Potter’s squad heading into 2025/26 will actually be stronger than the one limping towards a 17th place finish in 2024/25, well, the Hammers faithful can only hope and pray for greater success in the recruitment department this time around.

To think, less than 12 months ago, the summer of 2024 was supposed have been a real success for a West Ham United side some were labelling dark horses for a Europa League spot.

In Crysencio Summerville, Jean-Clair Todibo, Max Kilman, Luis Guilherme, Niclas Fullkrug and Guido Rodriguez, The Hammers signed not only proven Premier League operators but also experienced internationals and one of the brightest young talents in Brazil.

One year on, Fullkrug and the injury-hit Summerville join West Ham’s extensive array of overpriced, underperforming attackers. Todibo has been underwhelming at best. Luis Guilherme has been linked with Feyenoord after a season of brief cameos.

And there would be very few tears shed if the seldom-seen World Cup winner departs; Guido Rodriguez joined West Ham amid lofty expectations and now looks destined to depart via the back door.

It just goes to show. An impressive recruitment drive on paper can take on a very different image on grass.

The former Real Betis stalwart has played only two minutes off Premier League football since he was hauled off at half-time during January’s 2-0 home defeat to Crystal Palace.

TBR Football report that Rodriguez is seemingly not part of Potter’s plans. And while a January switch to Turkey and Saudi Arabia failed to materialise, the most likely solution now appears to be a return to the club where the 31-year-old midfielder started his career.

Manuel Lanzini re-joined River Plate after leaving the London Stadium.

Two years on, River Plate have opened talks with West Ham regarding another emotional homecoming to the Estadio Monumental.

“Guido Rodriguez wants to return to River Plate,” reporter Matias Cabezas now tells El Crack Deportivo. “The central midfielder told his family that he intends to return to Argentina in June.”

TNT Sports Argentina and Estadio Deportivo claim River Plate are willing to part with cash in order to secure Guido Rodriguez’s signature. At least West Ham, having signed the former Club America ace on a free transfer, will secure some semblance of profit for a man who looked ill-at-ease with the pace of the Premier League right from the first whistle.

River Plate also hope to get a deal done by mid-June, before their FIFA Club World Cup opener against Japanese outfit Urawa Red Diamonds.

Edson Alvarez, Mohammed Kudus and Luis Guilherme could leave

Further exits are likely to be on the way. West Ham may listen to offers for Mohammed Kudus, Al-Nassr interested despite an eye-watering £125 million release clause required for Saudi Arabian clubs.

Edson Alvarez is back on Bayern Munich’s radar, while Luis Guilherme has been considered by Feyenoord.

Though, as Dutch reporter Martijn Krabbendam explains, the 2023 Eredivisie champions may decide against moving for the former Palmeiras starlet with Anis Hadj-Moussa very highly-regarded on the right-hand flank.

“The problem with Guilherme is that he is a right-winger,” Krabbendam explains. “They still have Anis Hadj-Moussa there.

“If they want to buy [the West Ham benchwarmer], Feyenoord will have to break their transfer record again. He will come to De Kuip for no less than ten million euros [£8.5m].

“Is Feyenoord prepared to get him, while you have Hadj Moussa who has undergone an incredibly good development? He has also [proven himself] in the Champions League.

“There is interest in him too. If Hadj-Moussa leaves, then [signing Guilherme] could happen.”
