West Ham have put their Guillermo Maripan chase on hold. According to Mundo Deportivo, West Ham’s pursuit of Maripan appears to have stalled.
The Hammers have been strongly linked with the Deportivo Alaves and Chile defender in recent months. It is thought that Manuel Pellegrini wants to add one more central defender.
And Maripan is West Ham’s top target. Pellegrini is a big fan of his fellow countryman, who impressed in Spain last season and was solid at the recent Copa American tournament.
However, he has a release clause of €25m (£22.5m) while West Ham want to pay €15m (£13.5m), according to Marca. Perhaps put off by Alaves’ demands, West Ham could pull out of this Maripan deal.
The latest update is that West Ham’s move ‘seems to have stalled’. But Alaves have already signed Maripan’s replacement (Olivier Verdon) and the Chilean defender’s future is in doubt.
Winston Reid and Reece Oxford must use pre-season chance
Pellegrini wants another central defender to add to his ranks. At the moment, Issa Diop and Fabian Balbuena are the starting pair with Angelo Ogbonna providing back-up.
But the fourth-choice spot is up for grabs. Winston Reid and Reece Oxford both need to impress Pellegrini in pre-season to convince him to save his pennies on a Maripan deal.
Reid has been taken to China to compete in the Asia Trophy, while Oxford will remain behind. Reid has had a long-term injury while Oxford is struggling to live up to his early-career hype. But both players need to put their negative 2018/19 campaigns behind them and show why they can be like a new signing next season.
West Ham’s priority now is signing a striker. The Maripan deal is on hold because West Ham need the funds to sign a new frontman. If Reid or Oxford can show they deserve to be in the Hammers squad, then Maripan is not needed at all.
