West Ham United boss Manuel Pellegrini is intent on strengthening his forward line in January according to reports and there is a new name being linked.

The Hammers are at a crossroads over their striker options.

Andy Carroll is out of contract in the summer and does not fit Pellegrini’s style of play.

Lucas Perez and Javier Hernandez have both failed to impress and establish themselves.

That has meant an over reliance on winger turned striker Marko Arnautovic.

Never was that more evident than against Brighton last time out. The Austrian single-handedly dragged the Hammers back from 2-0 down with a quickfire brace to rescue a draw.

Red hot Defrel on Hammers hit list

West Ham have been linked with a host of strikers already the latest being Frenchman Gregoire Defrel (La Gazzetta dello Sport and Sky Italia)

The 27-year-old is owned by Serie A giants Roma but has been in red hot form on loan at Sampdoria. Defrel has a goal every other game so far this season with seven in 14 starts.

Known for his ability to dribble past his opponents with consummate ease, Defrel also has the physique to succeed in the Premier League.

West Ham must fend off interest from smaller Premier League rivals

The report claims West Ham may face competition from Watford and Fulham.

But the Hammers are a much bigger lure than both if they are serious about landing him.

Just 18 months ago Defrel was signed by Roma for £18 million before being sent out on loan after failing to make the breakthrough in the capital.

According to Sky Sport Italia and La Gazzetta dello Sport, it is possible Defrel will end his loan spell six months early to seal a move to East London.

Defrel a late bloomer

Despite his ability Defrel is something of a late bloomer and as such is yet to receive an international call-up for World champions France.

Reports elsewhere claim West Ham will have to sell to buy this window to satisfy Financial Fair Play rules.

Both Perez and Hernandez have been linked with moves elsewhere which could help facilitate the deal.
