West Ham United did indeed make a signing on Deadline Day in the form of Axel Disasi.
The French defender – who hasn’t played a competitive game at senior level in almost nine months – has joined West Ham United on loan from Chelsea for the rest of the season.
It was perhaps not the end to the January transfer window that many supporters would have hoped for.
Our squad is set, but it’s not perfect – and exactly who is to blame for that?
Indeed, while West Ham made four major signings during the 2026 January transfer window, there remain major doubts about the quality of their additions.
Still, what’s done is done and Disasi is now a West Ham United player. Now, his squad number has been confirmed.
West Ham United confirm Axel Disasi will wear the number four
Following the confirmation of the deal late into Deadline Day, confirmation was posted on West Ham’s official website.
It revealed that the former Monaco defender will wear the number four shirt during his time on loan at the club.
Disasi will be in line to make his Hammers debut against Burnley on Saturday, although it remains to be seen if he will be thrown into action so quickly given his lack of game time in recent months.
Nuno Espirito Santo is excited to work with Disasi, who is looking forward to playing first team football once again after being sat on the sidelines for so long at Chelsea.

But what do you think?
Players who have previously worn the number 4 shirt at West Ham United
The defender takes the shirt from Edson Alvarez, who is now on loan at Fenerbahce. Carlos Soler wore it during the 2024-25 season during his loan spell, while Kurt Zouma donned that number between 2021 and 2024.

The likes of Alex Song and Kevin Nolan have previously worn it in years gone by, too.
World Cup winners Bobby Moore, Martin Peters and Sir Geoff Hurst have also had the number four emblazoned across their backs at some point while playing for the club.
