It was reported last week by 90 Min that West Ham want to sign Real Madrid striker Luka Jovic this summer.

Now, the rumour seemed to be far-fetched to say the least. And not many Hammers fans would have been holding out any hope that Jovic would swap Madrid for east London.

And that scenario now seems even more unlikely.

Reral Madrid have just confirmed via their official website that the 22-year-old striker has broken his foot. Whilst no expected return date for the Serbia international has been given, a broken foot usually rules a player out for at least three months and any time up to a year, depending on the severity of the injury.

Hammers hopes dashed, but was it ever plausible?

Even if there was a slight glimmer of hope that David Moyes to reunite Jovic with Sebastien Haller, that is surely that now for West Ham.

In truth, Jovic was probably never actually on West Ham’s radar in the first place, however.

Madrid signed the talented young striker from Eintracht Frankfurt last summer for around £52 million (Daily Mail). And if Los Blancos were to sell him this summer, they would surely expect a similar kind of fee.

That would obviously be impossible for the Hammers. Especially considering the financial ramifications caused by the global health crisis.

It’s time for West Ham to get realistic with our summer targets.

As things stand, Jovic was surely out of our league. And the foot injury he has suffered will now make any kind of deal an absolute impossibilty.
