According to the print edition of Spanish newspaper AS on Friday (via Sport Witness), West Ham are one of four clubs chasing in-demand striker Maxi Gomez.
The report claims that Gomez is set to leave relegation-threatened Spanish club Celta Vigo.
And West Ham are joined by Tottenham Hotspur, Atletico Madrid and Barcelona in the race to sign Gomez.
West Ham’s long-term pursuit of Maxi Gomez
Back in January, Gomez was West Ham’s top transfer target. According to The Guardian, the Hammers were ready to pay his £43.5m release clause.
Gomez was seen as a replacement for Marko Arnautovic during the China saga. But neither move materialised, although West Ham could still swoop this summer.
The 22-year-old has scored 11 goals and provided five assists for Celta Vigo this season but they are in danger of relegation.
With seven games remaining, they sit two points and two places above the drop zone, having won two and drawn one of their last three matches.
Gomez is their prized asset but West Ham are hoping to poach him. The Irons see the Uruguay international as their main summer target.
But London rivals Tottenham could nip in front of West Ham, while Atletico and Barca could offer him the chance to stay in Spain.
Gomez would have more first-team chances at West Ham. But the lure of Champions League football could put West Ham fourth in this chase, depending on Gomez’s mindset.
