West Ham are still keen to bring Liverpool centre-back Nat Phillips to the London Stadium in the January window.
That’s according to well-renowned football journalist Dean Jones who told Give Me Sport:
“I think that they’ve (West Ham) already touched base about the value of that deal, and I think that they need to negotiate with Liverpool further if that one’s going to have a breakthrough, but that’s still on the agenda.“
The Athletic reported back in December that Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is keen to sell the 24-year-old centre-back in the January window.
And The Athletic reckon that £12 million could be enough for the Hammers to prise Phillips away from Anfield this month.
West Ham boss David Moyes has real problems on his hands in the central defensive department.
Angelo Ogbonna is out for the season whilst Kurt Zouma won’t be back for a week or so at the very best.
The problem for the Hammers is a long-term one as well though. Craig Dawson and Ogbonna will be 32 and 34 respectively before the start of next season.
So not only does Moyes need to get in a top-class centre-back to provide more competition and cover for the remainder of the season, but he needs to sign one for the future as well.
And it’s looking like the Scot has a plan up his sleeve to address that particular issue.
West Ham still in for Nat Phillips in January window
The Hammers have been very keen to bring the towering Liverpool centre-half to the London Stadium.
Doubts arose about West Ham making a move for Phillips a few weeks ago, however, when the Reds defender suffered a cheekbone fracture.
It seems as though the East London outfit are not deterred by Phillips’ injury though. That’s according to journalist Dean Jones at least.
And we think that signing the 24-year-old, in spite of his cheekbone injury, would 100 per cent the right call from David Moyes this month.
Phillips is a top-class Premier League defender and he’s only 24 – it’s a no-brainer!
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp recently described Phillips as ‘unbelievable’ (Liverpool Echo). Meanwhile, Rio Ferdinand raved about his display for the Reds at the San Siro last week, labelling Phillips as ‘beautiful’ and ‘Baresi like’ (Daily Mail).
So he clearly has something special about him.
Phillips is incredibly strong in the air and reads the game brilliantly. £12 million for his services seems to be outstanding value for West Ham.
The Liverpool ace would make a huge difference to our defending. With Issa Diop at the heart of our defence at the moment, it’s hard to watch us without your heart in your mouth isn’t it?
Phillips would sort that out in an instant. And if he isn’t due to be out too much longer with his cheekbone problem, David Moyes should not hesitate to bring him to West Ham this month.
