West Ham source claims Josh Cullen will be offered new deal because of Brexit

West Ham United are set to hand young midfielder Josh Cullen a new contract but not necessarily because they believe he can make the first team.

Cullen has had chances to prove himself at first team level.

But a series of mangers have not seen fit to bring him into the first team setup.

Cullen spending FIFTH season out on loan

The Republic of Ireland international can no longer be considered a promising youngster.

Cullen, who was shipped out on a loan to Charlton again this season, turns 24 in April.

But despite it being patently obvious to West Ham fans – and even captain Mark Noble – that Cullen is unlikely to make it at the club, he is set to receive a new long-term deal.

That’s according to Claret & Hugh.

New deal because of Brexit?

The website, which claims to have a top level source inside West Ham – believed to be co-owner David Sullivan – says Cullen will be offered a new deal due to the potential restrictions on foreign players due to Brexit.

“A well placed insider told us on the phone: “It  doesn’t make much sense to let another club come in – something will be sorted out,  of that I’m sure,” Claret & Hugh claim.

““With Brexit happening we need to hold on to our better young players given there will be restrictions on young foreign players from certain countries.”

Quite what supporters will make of that is debatable.

More evidence of owners’ penny-pinching?

Given the source Claret & Hugh’s info is believed to come from, many West Ham fans will see it as further evidence the owners have no intention of spending big money to push the club to the fabled next level.

Cullen is a tidy, dedicated and hard-working midfielder.

But the brutal truth is that if Manuel Pellegrini believes Carlos Sanchez is a better midfield option than Cullen then he clearly does not have a bight future in the claret and blue.
