According to a report from the Telegraph, West Ham are planning a cut-price swoop for Newcastle full-back Javi Manquillo in January.
And if the Hammers do end up signing the Spaniard, it would be an absolutely classic David Sullivan and David Gold move.
Rather than spend some real money in a position that undoubtedly needs sufficient strengthening, it seems as though West Ham are going to once again go for the cheap option.
The former Liverpool and Atletico Madrid man is a versatile player. He can play at either right-back or left-back, so the east London outfit are obviously trying to kill two birds with one stone.
Manquillo has hardly impressed during his time in England. The 25-year-old was a flop at Liverpool and at Sunderland, and he has hardly set the world alight at Newcastle.
The Spaniard’s contract expires in the summer, so the Magpies allegedly want to move him on for around £5 million in January.
And signing someone deemed not good enough for Newcastle or Sunderland would be so typical from the West Ham owners.
Manquillo is a decent player, but in no way would he help take the Hammers to another level.
If Sullivan and Gold want West Ham to be a big club, they had better start showing some ambition.
And a move for Manquillo should be avoided at all costs.
