West Ham should make a bold move for Emre Can in January

Manuel Pellegrini has assembled an extremely strong group of players at West Ham over the past 15 months or so.

One area that still appears to be weak, however, is defensive midfield.

Mark Noble is in the twilight years of his career. And Carlos Sanchez is clearly not good enough for a top six chasing Premier League side.

So the addition of an established deep-lying midfielder will surely be featuring highly on Pellegrini’s wish-list in January.

And with this in mind, West Ham should consider a bold move for Juventus ace Emre Can.

According to a report from Italian media outlet Calcio Mercato, the Turin giants are prepared to sell the 24-capped Germany international when the transfer window reopens.

The 25-year-old joined Juve on a free transfer from Liverpool in the summer of 2018. He has failed to establish himself with the Italian giants, however. Can has made just 21 league starts for Maurizio Sarri’s side.

That isn’t to say that he is not of the very highest quality, however. And he would undoubtedly help take West Ham to another level entirely.

Could West Ham make it happen?

Can possesses exceptional technical ability, and he has superb energy and drive. He would add some much needed impetus to the Hammers’ play through the middle of the park.

Quite how much West Ham would have to pay for the German is unclear, and there is, of course, no guarantee that he could be tempted to swap Turin for east London.

If the Hammers offer him guarantees of regular first-team action, however, he might just be convinced to move to the London Stadium in January.

And it would provide Can with the opportunity to prove himself in England, having failed to do so during his time with Liverpool.
