Marseille are closing in on the signing of West Ham target Nikola Maksimovic according to Sempre Inter.
Whilst missing out on the 29-year-old would be a blow for the Hammers, ironically it could actually work in our favour.
If the experienced Serb does in fact move to Marseille as expected, it may well open the door for West Ham boss David Moyes to swoop in for Duje Caleta-Car.
The 24-year-old Croatian would undoubtedly be the better option for West Ham out of the two players.
And he could be available for just £13 million this summer according to Foot Mercato – an absolute bargain.
West Ham missing out on Maksimovic a blessing in disguise?
Whilst the Serbia international would have been a fine addition, the 29-year-old isn’t in the same league as Caleta-Car.
In 33 Ligue 1 appearances for Marseille last season, the 24-year-old scored two goals and registered one assist. In those outings, the Croatian averaged 0.9 tackles, 1.3 interceptions and 3.9 clearances per game. He also won an average of 2.5 aerial duals per match (Who Scored).
The Croatian is also very good with the ball at his feet. From an average of 57.4 passes per game last season in Ligue 1, Caleta-Car recorded an impressive completion rate of 86.1% (Who Scored).
£13 million would be an absolute steal for the Croatian.
Well-renowned football analysis and scouting website IBWM recently described Caleta-Car as an ‘exceptional talent’.
Losing out on Maksimovic wouldn’t be so bad. Caleta-Car is far superior.
