West Ham made the right call ditching Javier Hernandez as Mexican struggles for goals and game time at Sevilla

West Ham United’s decision to sell Javier Hernandez to Sevilla on deadline day raised eyebrows.

Not because the Mexican had been a star performer for the Hammers. The truth is he struggled to ever truly establish himself in East London.

More because in doing so Manuel Pellegrini had shipped out ALL FIVE of last season’s strikers leaving record buy Sebastien Haller as his only proven goalscorer.

Were Hammers right to leave striker Chicharit-go?

There was also some surprise given Haller seemed the perfect foil to finally get the best out of Chicharito.

Hernandez aimed a dig at West Ham upon leaving, insisting Sevilla was a step up, read full story.

But it appears West Ham made the right decision.

Hernandez has endured an all too familiar struggle in Spain.

There has been a distinct lack of goals and game time since the move with Chicarito scoring just ONCE in La Liga so far, from 10 appearances.

All too familiar struggles for Hernandez

He scored two goals in the Europa League to bring his tally to three in 15 games.

And he has played just 241 minutes of Sevilla’s last 450.

There is still an argument to say West Ham could have done with Hernandez so far this season, particularly during their abysmal run over the last two months.

It is doubtful whether he would have made a huge difference, though.

Hammers vindicated but only if striker arrives in January

And West Ham slashed £145,000 off their weekly wage bill while also bringing in a decent transfer fee for a player who would have been out of contract at the end of the season anyway.

The decision to let Hernandez leave looks to have been vindicated.

But only if West Ham bring in a quality partner for Haller in the January transfer window.
