West Ham Kalidou Koulibaly transfer rumour surely ranks as the most ridiculous of all time

West Ham United have been named in what surely ranks as one of the most ridiculous transfer rumours of all time.

West Ham are a massive club. The East Londoners have the second most season ticket holders in the top flight and are the 17th richest club in world football in terms of income.

They have signed and produced some world class players over the years.

But a Daily Express report that West Ham are ready to launch an audacious £70million bid for Napoli star Kalidou Koulibaly are nothing short of laughable.

Kalidou believe it?

“The Hammers are prepared to splash money during the transfer window after briefly dropping into relegation places over the busy festive period,” The Express reports.

There is no reason West Ham would not be able to lure a player from Napoli.

Everyone knows money talks in football and the riches on offer in the Premier League far outweigh those in Italy.

But Koulibaly is among the top three defenders in world football alongside Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk.

And the likes of Manchester City, Barcelona, PSG and a host of other clubs have been linked with the Senegal hero.

So the chances of him signing for the Hammers is surely slim to none.

The most laughable transfer rumour yet

Indeed the chances of West Ham ever spending that kind of money on one player – under the current owners at least – are non-existent.

The speculation was largely laughed off by realistic West Ham fans on social media.

But in an effort to try and give the story some credence, some fans suggested West Ham could be ready to sell young star Issa Diop to help fund the move.

Tevez and Mascherano part 2? Not a chance

Even if that was the case David Moyes would somehow have to convince Koulibaly to sacrifice European football AND beat off competition from some of the world’s biggest clubs.

The last time West Ham pulled off a signing of this magnitude was the double arrival of Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano.

But football has changed a lot since then and this is one transfer we can say with confidence is a non-starter.

And if not then we’ll happily eat our words.
