The 29-year-old defender is out of contract with the Hammers in the summer.

Balbuena has been a decent servant for West Ham. Let’s not kid ourselves, however.

The General is an average centre-back at the very best. He lacks any kind of pace and his passing ability really is very poor.

Moving Balbuena on will be the right call from the Hammers.

West Ham have talented centre-back trio up their sleeve

Releasing Balbuena will enable David Moyes to bring through three very exciting young defenders.

Jamal Baptiste and Aji Alese have both really impressed for the club’s youth teams over the past 12 months. Frederik Alves, meanwhile, arrived at West Ham in January with a huge reputation from his homeland.

At 17, 20 and 21 respectively, the future certainly looks bright for the Hammers in the central defensive department.

Losing Balbuena will not be anything to get upset about.

The really good news if that happens is that Baptiste, Alese and Alves will have a greater chance of earning first-team minutes next season.

And considering the young trio’s outstanding ability and potential, that is something for West Ham fans to get very excited about.
