According to reports in Turkey, West Ham have failed with an opening bid for Gary Medel.
Besiktas have rejected West Ham’s €7m (£6.5m) bid for Medel, according to Turkish media outlet Milliyet.
It remains to be seen whether the Hammers will return with a new offer.
Besiktas are struggling financially and have recently been forced into releasing ex-Real Madrid defender Pepe.
But they seem keen to retain Medel, having rejected West Ham’s significant bid for the veteran midfield man.
West Ham chase midfielder
With Carlos Sanchez and Jack Wilshere out injured, West Ham are looking for a new midfielder in January.
And with Fabian Balbuena also suffering with a knock at the moment, the Irons are light in central defence.
Medel fits the bill as a holding midfielder who can also operate at centre-back.
Who is Gary Medel?
The Chile international is a vastly experienced player in Europe and he has 114 caps for his country.
Fellow Chilean Manuel Pellegrini is keen on the 31-year-old, who has played for Sevilla and Inter Milan before joining Besiktas.
Medel also had a stint with Cardiff City in the Premier League, racking up 35 appearances but failing to keep the Bluebirds up in the 2013/14 season.
Medel’s 2018/19 campaign in numbers
In 19 Super Lig and Europa League games for Besiktas, Medel has proven why he has a reputation for tough tackling and tenacity in central midfield.
With a tally of 50 tackles, 29 interceptions, 47 clearances and 24 blocks, as per Who Scored, Medel’s defensive work is impressive.
The diminutive midfielder has also completed 972 passes in 19 games, highlighting his ability on the ball.
