According to a report from Italian media outlet Tutto Mercato Web, West Ham are interested in signing Ignazio Abate on a free transfer, and some Hammers fans took to Twitter in reaction to the speculation.
Right-back is certainly an area where the east London outfit need to strengthen in the long-term.
But they should have enough to see them through the rest of this season.
Pablo Zabaleta is not the player he once was, and he is leaving in the summer. Ryan Fredericks, meanwhile, has been extremely disappointing since arriving from Fulham in the summer of 2018.
West Ham manager David Moyes will be hoping that he still hasn’t seen the best of the 27-year-old, however.
Tutto Mercato Web claims that the Hammers are looking to strengthen in that precise department, however, even though the transfer window is closed.
Free agents can be signed at any time of course.
Ignazio Abate is available on a free transfer, having been released by AC Milan in the summer. And West Ham allegedly want to bring the 33-year-old to the London Stadium.
The wisdom behind bringing in someone who is nearing his mid 30’s, and hasn’t played a competitive match for eight months, however, is highly questionable.
