David Moyes does have a dearth of options in central midfield.
Tomas Soucek and Declan Rice have forged a wonderful partnership at the London Stadium this season.
It is a real worry, however, that if one of those two players were to suffer an injury, we only have Mark Noble in reserve.
The Hammers’ priority should be to sign an established striker this month. Our need for another central midfielder cannot be overlooked, however.
West Ham clearly need to sign another central midfielder, even if we just bring an average Premier League player in purely as a backup.
Crystal Palace ace James McCarthy is a very solid player. The 42-capped Republic of Ireland international is a hard worker.
He has nothing special about him thought that’s for sure.
He is hardly a popular player in East London either after committing a horrendous foul on Dimitri Payet in 2016 – one that kept the Frenchman out of action for months.
In fact, it could be argued that he is somewhat of a hate figure in the East End. So signing him would really be a crazy move.
