West Ham United will undoubtedly be selling some players at the end of the season, in order to raise funds for an assault on the transfer market this summer.
David Moyes needs to strengthen his West Ham squad in the summer transfer window, but he’ll be be selling some players as well, there’s no question about that.
Premier League clubs are now under pressure to conform to the new ‘profit and sustainability rules’ (PSR), and the Hammers are no different, despite the fact that we’ve received a much needed £13 million bonus from UEFA for our exploits in the Europa League this season.
West Ham will have to be careful what we spend this summer, bit we’re in a stronger position than most. The £105 million that we sold Declan Rice for will come in very handy, as will the aforementioned Europa League bonus- something that football finance expert Kieran Maguire recently highlighted:
“As far as the new rules are concerned for West Ham, I don’t think it will make a significant amount of difference .And the reason why I say that is that the owners weren’t particularly keen on taking the club close to the limit because they wanted to try to run it in a more sustainable manner. And clearly looking at my projections, they would not be in a fantastic position with regards to PSR. But my calculations are very crude because I’m looking at historic data and I’ve had to make a few assumptions. But I think actually the club might have more wiggle room. Remember West Ham this season are in the Europa League so have got the benefit of extra money coming in from that and they’ve got the sale of Declan Rice – that would go into the calculations as well.”
So, it seems like we have a really busy summer ahead of us, with Moyes in need of numerous new additions.
Everything looks pretty good for us at the moment, but we can boost our coffers even further still by selling a couple of players who Moyes clearly doesn’t want, or need…
West Ham could raise £17 million by selling 2 players
Moyes has always preferred a small squad – he has said so himself in the past. However, this means that certain players get pushed to one side and end up seeing very little action indeed.
That was the main reason why we had to let Said Benrahma and Pablo Fornals leave in the January transfer window.
And now, West Ham will probably have to let two more fringe players go this summer, but I won’t have a problem at all with them leaving, and we could pocket fairly tidy fees for them…
Maxwel Cornet and Flynn Downes are both surely set for summer exits from the London Stadium.
The 27-year-old Ivorian winger has played just 102 minutes of Premier League action this season for the Hammers (Transfermarkt), whilst Downes has spent the campaign on loan with Southampton.
West Ham are said to be looking for around £10 million for Downes this summer, whilst we are said to be asking for roughly £7 million for Cornet (Takvim).
The 25-year-old former Swansea City midfielder is a solid player but he’s not quite Premier League level in my opinion, and there’s no way he’s getting into the side ahead of Edson Alvarez.
Meanwhile, Cornet is just not reliable enough from a fitness perspective, and Moyes clearly doesn’t rate him.
If West Ham end up selling the two players this summer for anywhere near £17 million combined, I’ll be over the moon, it has to be said!
