West Ham could be left with huge regret as report claims Southampton close in on Romain Perraud

West Ham could be set to miss out on the signing of Romain Perraud to Southampton according to a report from The Athletic.

L’Equipe claims that the deal to sign the 23-year-old left-back could cost the Saints just £8.5 million.

So the question has to be asked…why didn’t the Hammers push harder for Perraud?

David Moyes should be looking to bolster his left-back ranks at the London Stadium.

It could be argued that the need for a centre-forward, a central midfielder and a centre-back trumps the need to sign a new left-back, however.

With that in mind, the chance to sign a top class left sided defender for a bargain fee should have been one that West Ham grasped.

That would have enabled Moyes to use his transfer budget on other areas of his squad that are in more urgent need of attention.

West Ham could regret letting Southampton win Perraud race

The 23-year-old is all set to join the Saints according to The Athletic.

In 36 games for Stade Brest last season, the left-back racked up three goals and seven assists (Who Scored).

During those outings, he averaged 1.7 tackles, 1.3 interceptions and 1.8 clearances per game. He averaged 43 passes per match and recorded a completion rate of 80% (Who Scored).

Perraud has all the makings a truly top class full-back. He’s great going forward, is a sound defender and is incredibly athletic and energetic.

We think that West Ham could live to regret not signing the 23-year-old. He would have been a great long-term replacement for Aaron Cresswell.
