West Ham United co-owner David Gold has been savaged by fans on Twitter after waiting until deadline day to announce a low key striker arrival.
West Ham’s increasingly desperate attempts to sign a striker before last night’s transfer deadline hit a dead end.
The Hammers were linked with a plethora of forwards going into deadline day.
The long-running interest in Maxi Gomez came to nothing after talk a deal for the summer could be struck and announced (Sky Sports).
And it leaves Manuel Pellegrini facing a difficult period over strikers.
Come the summer all four of his current forwards could be on their way out of the club.
Lucas Perez and Javier Hernandez have both been linked with moves away. Andy Carroll’s contract is up in the summer and is not expected to be extended.
Marko Arnautovic has signed an improved deal to keep him at the club but his future too is uncertain.
Michy Batshuayi was linked with a last ditch loan move to West Ham but wages were an issue (The Sun) and he ended up joining Crystal Palace.
Olivier Giroud and Duvan Zapata were mentioned and the Hammers also reportedly failed with an 11th hour bid for France Under 21 international striker Jean-Kevin Augustin (The Sun).
Fans left feeling flat
It has left West Ham fans feeling a little flat given the Premier League-worst injury list being nursed by Manuel Pellegrini.
So when co-owner David Gold chose deadline day evening to announce the low key signing of unknown forward Mesaque Dju it lit the blue touch paper.
Dju signed for West Ham on a free transfer on Wednesday after being released by Benfica (whufc.com).
In an announcement on the club’s official website West Ham made it clear the 19-year-old was signed as an academy prospect rather than for the first team.
Hammers co-owner Gold sparks outrage
Gold then waited until deadline day evening to announce it on his own personal Twitter account to his near 200,000 followers.
And it did not go down well.
“I am delighted to confirm the signing of Portugal U20 international forward Mesaque Dju,” Gold said on Twitter.
“The 19-year-old joins the Hammers from Portuguese club Benfica on a 3 and 1/2 year contract and will begin life in Claret and Blue as a member of Liam Manning and Steve Potts’ U23 squad. DG.”

I would be delighted to see the sales of Masuaku, Ogbonna, Obiang, Carrol and Hernandez.
Then you can go and buy us a left back, a ball playing CM and a striker who knows where the goal is

‘You should be ashamed’
Don’t you think it was more important to get players in for the first-team

David, this happened yesterday, he’s not even a first team player. It’s deadline day, we’re short in key positions and we’ve had 3 embrassing performances on the trot with players showing no passion. You skipped PR lessons didn’t you? I’m going to bed.

Very exciting that another who know doubt will drift off to obscurity on loan never to be seen again, is that Sullivan’s way of keeping a certain agent happy

NEXT LEVEL STUFF!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH. YOU REALLY HAVE SAVED OUR CLUB…

If he’s so good how come Benfica let him go for free !?! 🤔
Another destined for U23 squad, then unsuccessful loans to some League 2 Spanish clubs and eventual free transfer at the end if his contract.
